New Year's Eve torchlight walk and the Vecia bonfire in Caoria, Vanoi valley

In Caoria the old year goes up in flames, quite literally. On the evening of 31 December the village climbs by torchlight and lights a great bonfire to burn the Vecia, the figure that stands for the year coming to an end. Then everyone celebrates together, with mulled wine and a homemade cake contest: a village New Year, far from crowded squares.

Torches, bonfire and mulled wine in Caoria

At the last edition, on 31 December 2025, the meeting point was at 7 pm at the third hairpin bend of the Scalon road, with the torchlight walk setting off at 7.30 pm. After the Vecia bonfire, the evening carried on with the New Year's party.

Around the same time the Vanoi offers other small winter traditions, such as the living nativity in Cicona and evening walks to the mountain huts.

The holiday programme is published every year by the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero e Vanoi.
