Our story

From mountain hayloft to private residence: the story of Chalet Prà dell'Ostio

Today, Chalet Prà dell'Ostio is an exclusive private retreat. Its elegance is that of the mountains in their simplest form: wood, stone, silence, expressed without embellishment, much as those who built to endure the winter knew how to do, rather than to impress.

You will find no unnecessary decoration. Every choice, from the materials to the open spaces, stems from a precise idea of luxury: having time, space and privacy without having to seek them.
It is the owners' choice: to offer an entire home, not a collection of rooms. A place that imposes nothing and asks you to adapt to no schedules, habits or strangers under the same roof.

Because when comfort is taken for granted, true luxury can be as simple as this: the freedom to simply be yourself.

A story that goes way back

Roots reaching back to the 1800s

The building that is now home to Chalet Prà dell'Ostio is an old Primiero farmstead, or maso. The earliest documents recording its existence are the Austrian cadastral maps of the mid-nineteenth century, but in all likelihood the maso is even older. At its heart is the tabià, the traditional barn with a stone base for the livestock and an upper structure built entirely of wood, where hay was stored for the winter. It is a building type found throughout the valley, designed to bear the weight of the snow with just two materials: stone and wood.

The maso also includes the adjoining casera, the hut where herders and farmers lived during the months of summer grazing, when they took their livestock up to the high pastures.

For years the maso then hosted summer camps and nights under one roof for Scout groups. Only recently did it become the private residence it is today, with its original structure and materials left intact.

From hay barn and herders' hut to dormitory, and finally to a private residence, the maso has never betrayed its nature. At heart, it has remained a place made for welcoming: first the livestock, the hay and those who looked after them, then generations of young people at summer camp, and today a single group at a time. It is the guests who have changed, not the spirit of the place.
