Gran Festa del Desmontegar: the autumn transhumance through the villages of Primiero

 -

At the end of summer the cattle leave the high pastures and return to the valley: in Primiero this homecoming, the desmontegar, has become a four-day festival. The highlight is Sunday, when the herds, led by breeders in traditional dress, make their way through the villages of the valley. Around it, the cattle show, days devoted to cheese, the artisans' market and music.

The programme

Four days celebrating the return to the valley

In 2026, from 24 to 27 September, the festival was spread across Fiera di Primiero, Tonadico, Siror, Transacqua, Mezzano and Imer, with a stop at Passo Cereda and in Val Canali too.

It opens with the cattle show at the Fiera bus station, where breeders from Primiero and Vanoi present cows, calves and horses. Then come the Dì del Formai at Palazzo Scopoli, devoted to the dairy tradition, visits to farmsteads and farms, the Saperi e Sapori market and evenings of music. Sunday is the day of the Desmontegada, with the procession of the herds through the valley.

Some activities require booking: the full programme is published every year by the ApT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero e Vanoi.
